About Sisimiut Museum
The Sisimiut Museum (Sisimiut Katersugaasiviat) occupies several colonial‑era buildings in the old neighbourhood near the harbour. Some date from the 18th century and were moved from the original settlement site when the colony relocated to the present spot.
The displays trace the occupation of the region from the Saqqaq culture more than four thousand years ago to the colonial era and the town of today. A significant part comes from Nipisat, a Saqqaq site excavated by the museum itself and now part of the Aasivissuit–Nipisat UNESCO heritage area.
On the grounds there is a reconstructed turf house, like those used by Inuit in winter, and a gate made from whale jaw bones at the entrance to the old houses’ courtyard.
The museum also preserves the old altar from Bethel Church, which stands beside it, and collections of tools, clothing and everyday objects.
