About Nanortalik Museum
The Nanortalik Museum occupies the town’s old harbour, an area of wooden and stone colonial houses that has changed little since the 19th century. About ten of these buildings are used as exhibition rooms, and the visit is a walk between them.
Each house covers a theme: seal oil production, health and medicinal plants, Nordic clothing, the radio, traditional boats such as the kayak and the umiak. There are also turf houses and objects from the lives of local hunters and fishermen.
It is one of Greenland’s most complete local museums, and the old harbour area retains the layout of a small 19th-century colony, with a quay, warehouses and staff houses.
The visit pairs well with a walking tour of the town and the large wooden church, visible from almost the entire centre.
