About The Narrows
The Narrows is the narrowest section of Zion Canyon, where the Virgin River runs between cliff walls that exceed 300 meters in height and, in places, stand only a few meters apart. There is no trail along the banks: you walk the riverbed, with water at ankle, knee level, or higher depending on the season.
The most common way to visit is an upstream hike from the Temple of Sinawava, the park shuttle’s final stop. The paved Riverside Walk goes about 1.5 km to the point where the trail ends and the river begins. From there, each visitor goes as far as they want and returns the same way; many reach Wall Street, the tightest section, a few hours’ walk away. That upstream route does not require a permit. Traversing the canyon end-to-end requires a park permit.
The park closes The Narrows when river flow exceeds a safety threshold, common during spring melt and after heavy rain. In summer storms, from July to September, there is a risk of sudden flash floods; rangers publish the risk forecast every day.
The water is often cold even in summer. Proper boots, neoprene socks, and a trekking pole help maintain balance on the smooth river rocks.
