About Angels Landing

Angels Landing is a narrow sandstone ridge that projects into the middle of Zion Canyon, about 450 meters above the river. The name reportedly came from a remark by a Methodist minister in 1916 that only an angel could land there. The trail to the summit is one of the most famous in the United States.

The route starts at the Grotto shuttle stop, crosses the river and climbs on the West Rim Trail, paved for much of the way, with a series of switchbacks. After a shaded canyon, Refrigerator Canyon, come the 21 tight switchbacks of Walter’s Wiggles, which lead to Scout Lookout, a broad viewpoint. Up to that point no permit is needed; beyond it, the final stretch of about 800 meters follows the ridge with fixed chains anchored into the rock and drops on both sides.

That final section requires a park permit, distributed by online lottery, with seasonal draws and a day-before lottery. The full round trip is about 8.7 km with approximately 450 meters of elevation gain. The park may close the trail for repairs or on days with ice or storms.

This is not a trail for those with a fear of heights or for small children. Scout Lookout already provides a wide view of the canyon.
