Approximate distances. Check flights and bus, train or boat schedules before you travel.
It lies on US‑89, about an hour's drive from Springdale and from Page and roughly an hour and a half from Bryce Canyon City. For scheduled flights, the route is St. George, about two hours away.
How many days
One night is enough for the Coral Pink dunes and the town center. Kanab works well as a two‑ or three‑day base to visit Zion and Bryce without paying the rates at the park gates.
When to go
From spring through autumn, with hot summers. The dunes heat up in the midday sun; go in the morning or late afternoon. Winter is cold and dry, with occasional snow.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Yes. The dunes, canyons and parks are tens of kilometers apart and there is no public transport.

Go early to the Coral Pink dunes, walk along the crests and, if you wish, rent a sandboard to ride down the slopes.

Return to town, see the pioneer houses and the panels about movies filmed in the area. Then continue to Zion, Bryce, or Page.

Is Kanab a good base for Zion and Bryce?
Yes. It’s about an hour from Springdale and roughly an hour and a half from Bryce Canyon City, and it offers more lodging options than the towns at the park gates. It’s also close to Page and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
What time zone is Kanab in?
Utah’s: UTC-7 in winter and UTC-6 during daylight saving time. From March to November, Kanab is one hour ahead of Page and Fredonia, just across the line in Arizona.
How do I get a permit for The Wave?
The Wave trail in the Vermilion Cliffs has a limited daily number of permits, distributed by lottery through the federal public lands agency online, both in advance and the day before. Check current rules before planning.
What films were shot in Kanab?
Many western films and TV series used the landscapes around Kanab starting in the 1920s, which earned the town the nickname Little Hollywood. Panels in town center tell that story.
