About National Elk Refuge
The National Elk Refuge was established in 1912 to protect the elk herds that descend from the mountains to spend the winter in the valley. It lies next to Jackson and covers a plain of meadows and marshes between the town and the Gros Ventre Range.
In winter, six to eight thousand elk typically gather in the refuge. From mid-December to early April, horse-drawn sleigh rides take visitors close to the herds. The refuge also shelters bison, trumpeter swans, eagles and coyotes.
The visitor center, at the town’s north entrance, is shared with other agencies and provides information about all the region’s parks. In summer the elk return to the mountains, and the refuge is more frequented by birdwatchers.
