About Dia Beacon
Dia Beacon opened in 2003 in a former factory where the National Biscuit Company printed and assembled boxes, built in 1929 on the Hudson. The brick building is mostly single-story, about 15,000 m², with sawtooth skylights that fill the galleries with natural light.
The museum is run by the Dia Art Foundation and focuses on artists from the 1960s onward, often dedicating entire rooms to each artist. Richard Serra’s Torqued Ellipses, large curved steel plates, can be walked through from the inside. There are Dan Flavin fluorescent light installations, Andy Warhol’s Shadows series, Agnes Martin’s paintings and Louise Bourgeois’s spiders.
On the concrete floor, Michael Heizer’s works are large geometric holes excavated into the ground, and other galleries show works by Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd and Gerhard Richter. The expansive, quiet space is part of the experience.
The grounds include a garden designed by an artist and abut a riverside park, a few minutes’ walk from the train station.
