Approximate distances. Check flights and bus, train or boat schedules before you travel.
About an hour and a half by car from Santa Fe, following the road up the Rio Grande valley, and about two and a half hours from Albuquerque. There are regional buses from Santa Fe; a car is more practical for exploring the surroundings.
How many days
One day is enough for Taos Pueblo, the plaza and the Rio Grande bridge. With an overnight stay you can add the Church of Ranchos de Taos and the city’s art museums.
When to go
From spring to fall, with pueblo festivals on dates of the traditional calendar. In winter there is skiing at Taos Ski Valley, about 30 km away. Taos Pueblo closes to visitors for around ten weeks between late winter and early spring.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Yes, for the pueblo, the bridge and the Church of Ranchos de Taos, which are outside the center. The plaza and galleries are explored on foot.
