About Cliff Walk
The Cliff Walk is a public path of about 5.6 km that follows Newport’s east coast over cliffs and rocks. It starts at Easton Beach on Memorial Boulevard and goes south to near Bailey’s Beach. On one side is the open sea; on the other, the lawns and walls of the Gilded Age mansions. It is a recreational trail of national significance.
The right of way is old: fishermen used the path before the mansions, and residents preserved public access even when the grounds were purchased by wealthy families. For that reason the path runs right alongside the gardens of The Breakers, Rosecliff and Marble House, with views of their façades.
The northern section is paved and easy, with benches and the Forty Steps staircase that descends to the sea at the end of Narragansett Avenue. Further south, the path goes through short tunnels and becomes a trail over loose rocks, with ups and downs, until it ends at Ledge Road.
Because of coastal erosion, some sections may be closed for stabilization work, with detours along nearby streets. The city provides information on open sections.

How much time to set aside
Two to three hours for the full route, one way; one hour for the northern section, between Easton Beach and The Breakers.
Best time
Early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when there are fewer people. On days with rough seas, waves hit the rocks hard. The path is open year-round, depending on conditions.
How to get there
There are access points on Memorial Boulevard, on Narragansett Avenue, by the Forty Steps, and on other streets that descend from Bellevue Avenue. Street parking is limited. Walking is free. Before you go, check the city website for sections that are open.
