The city
A port town on Aquidneck Island, founded in 1639, which in the late 19th century became a summer retreat for major New York industrialists and bankers. Along Bellevue Avenue are the Gilded Age palaces, such as The Breakers and Marble House, open to visitors. The Cliff Walk runs between the gardens and the sea, Ocean Drive skirts the rocky coast and Fort Adams guards the harbor entrance, which is full of sailboats. The colonial center has wooden houses and old churches.
