About Muhammad Ali Center

Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville in 1942 as Cassius Clay and began boxing at age 12 after his bicycle was stolen. The Muhammad Ali Center, on the banks of the Ohio River, tells that story across three floors of exhibits.

The route begins with an introductory film and goes through his childhood in the city, the gold medal at the Rome Olympics in 1960, his world titles and his most famous fights, which can be replayed on screens. One section deals with his positions outside the ring, such as his refusal of military service and his religious conversion, and another covers his humanitarian work in later years.

The museum organizes the exhibition around six principles Ali chose as a guide for life: confidence, conviction, dedication, giving, respect and spirituality. There is a punching bag and a training ring for visitors to try.

From the upper floors, the windows look out over the river and the Indiana shore.
