About Kentucky Derby Museum
The Kentucky Derby Museum sits adjacent to Churchill Downs, south of downtown Louisville. It tells the story of the United States’ most famous horse race, run by three‑year‑old Thoroughbreds every first Saturday in May since 1875.
The two floors of exhibits display trophies, saddles and jockey silks, the tradition of extravagant spectator hats, and the mint julep—bourbon with mint—the signature drink of race day. A film shown in a circular auditorium on a 360‑degree screen recreates the thrill of a race start.
Admission includes a short guided tour of Churchill Downs: the group goes to the fence of the dirt track, passes the grandstands and sees the two white spires of the racetrack, the venue’s most recognizable image. There are separately ticketed special visits, such as morning stable tours when the horses train.
On Derby weekend the museum closes to the general public; in the weeks leading up to it, tours fill up.
