About Keeneland

Keeneland is a racetrack opened in 1936 west of Lexington, opposite the airport. The limestone grandstands and stables, set among trees and lawns, make it one of the most traditional racetracks in the United States, recognized as a national historic landmark.

Racing takes place in two short seasons, in April and in October, attracting an audience of breeders, students and families. One of the April races serves as a tune-up for the Kentucky Derby.

Keeneland is also home to Thoroughbred auctions, where foals and mares are sold to buyers from many countries. At certain times, the auctions can be followed from the sales pavilion grandstand.

Outside the seasons, visitors can walk the grounds and, on many mornings, see horses training on the track very early.
