About Atchafalaya Basin
The Atchafalaya Basin is the flooded plain of the Atchafalaya River, a distributary of the Mississippi that flows to the Gulf of Mexico. With cypress forests, lakes, bayous and islands, it is the largest river swamp in the United States.
I-10 crosses the basin between Lafayette and Baton Rouge on an elevated bridge of roughly 29 km, one of the longest in the country, with water and trees visible on both sides. At the Butte La Rose exit, a state visitor center explains the region’s geography and wildlife with a film and exhibits.
Boat tours mainly depart from Henderson, a few kilometers from Breaux Bridge, and follow the channels through the cypress. Crawfish and catfish fishermen still work the basin, and the area’s Cajun culture developed in part along these waters.
Herons, bald eagles and alligators are among the animals commonly seen.
