About Union Station Kansas City
Kansas City’s Union Station opened in 1914, when the city was one of the country’s major railroad hubs. Built in the Beaux-Arts style, it has a main concourse with a ceiling about 29 meters high, hanging chandeliers, and a large clock in the center.
After decades of neglect, the building was restored in the late 1990s. Long-distance trains returned, and the space gained Science City, an interactive science museum for families, a planetarium, temporary exhibition halls, a movie theater, and restaurants.
In the halls, panels and a small model train tell the story of the city’s railroads. A covered walkway, the Link, connects the station to the adjacent Crown Center shopping complex, and a staircase in front leads up to the Liberty Memorial.
The city streetcar stops at the station.
