Skagway is one of the few towns in the Inside Passage with a road: the Klondike Highway connects it to Whitehorse in Yukon, Canada, and to the rest of North America. State ferries link the town to Haines and Juneau, and there are short flights from Juneau. Cruise ships dock alongside the historic streets.
How many days
One day for the White Pass train and the historic center. With two days, you can include Dyea, mountain hikes or a drive along the Klondike Highway into Canada.
When to go
From May to September, when the train, the park and most services are open. Skagway is drier than the surrounding region. In winter the town is nearly empty and many services close.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Not for the historic center, which is explored on foot. For Dyea or the Klondike Highway there are tours or car rentals; those crossing into Canada need the country’s entry documents. Drive on the right.
