Juneau – Alaska Destination Juneau and the Inside Passage Capital

How to get there

  • Juneau International Airport (JNU) 13 km
  • Auke Bay Ferry Terminal Auke Bay · 20 km

Approximate distances. Check flights and bus, train or boat schedules before you travel.

Juneau International Airport (JNU) is about 13 km from downtown, with taxis and city buses. State ferries arrive at the Auke Bay terminal, about 20 km from downtown. Cruise ships dock in the center, next to the aerial tramway.

How many days

Two days allow you to see Mendenhall Glacier, the downtown with the museum and the tramway, and to take a whale-watching tour. Cruise visitors typically have one day.

When to go

In the summer season, from May to September, when tours, the tramway and the glacier visitor center operate. It rains frequently year-round; June and July tend to be a bit drier. Winter is wet and dark, with snow.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Not essential: downtown can be walked, and city buses and tour buses go to the glacier and Auke Bay. A rental car gives freedom to reach the glacier and the north road. Drive on the right.
