About Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube)
The Nāhuku lava tube, also called Thurston Lava Tube, formed about 500 years ago when a river of lava cooled and hardened on the outside while the interior kept flowing. When the lava ran out, a hollow tunnel remained. It was named in English for Lorrin Thurston, a Honolulu newspaper editor who explored it in 1913 and advocated for the park’s creation.
The visit begins with a short trail that descends into a depression covered in wet forest, with tree ferns, the hāpuʻu, and ʻōhiʻa trees with red flowers. It’s common to hear native birds, such as the ʻapapane.
The section open to the public is about 200 meters, with an even floor and lighting, and enough height to walk standing up. The walls show marks of lava flow, and drops of water that seep through the rock hang from the ceiling. At the end, a stair climbs back to the forest.
The parking lot is small and fills during busy hours. The complete return, including the trail and the tunnel, is about 1 km.
