The city

What to expect from Volcano.

A village in the wet forest, at about 1,100 meters above sea level, next to the entrance of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. It has cottages, art galleries, a winery and restaurants. Nights are cool. It is the closest base for the Kīlauea caldera, the Nāhuku lava tube and the park’s trails, and lies on the way to the black sand beach of Punaluʻu.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

The park of Kīlauea and part of Mauna Loa, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the caldera and the Halemaʻumaʻu crater, steam fields, trails over solidified lava and the road that descends to the sea. When the volcano is erupting, the rim viewpoints gather visitors.

Punaluu Black Sand Beach

Black-sand beach made of lava fragments on the Kaʻū coast, south of the Volcanoes Park, where green sea turtles often rest on the sand. It’s a common stop on the road between Volcano and Kona.
