About ʻAkaka Falls

ʻAkaka Falls State Park is on the slopes of the Hāmākua coast, about 18 km north of Hilo, above the village of Honomū. Kolekole Stream plunges about 135 meters into an amphitheater-shaped gorge, one of the tallest waterfalls with easy access in Hawaiʻi.

A paved loop trail of roughly 700 meters, with stairs, descends through the cloud forest. The path passes giant bamboo, fig trees, heliconias, gingers and orchids, many of them introduced species that have spread through the area. A lookout shows the Kahūnā Falls, about 120 meters, from a distance before you reach the viewpoint facing ʻAkaka.

The falls have water year-round, since the Hāmākua coast receives frequent rain. The flow increases after rainy days. The park charges an entrance and parking fee for out-of-state visitors.

The old road that runs through Honomū, called Old Māmalahoa Highway, has scenic stretches with bridges over valleys and sea views, and can be combined with the visit.
