About Old State House Museum
The old Arkansas State Capitol was built between 1833 and 1842 in a neoclassical style, with white columns and a portico facing the town center. It is regarded as the oldest state capitol still standing west of the Mississippi River.
It served as the seat of government until the early 20th century, when the new capitol was completed. It witnessed Arkansas’s entry into the Union in 1836, the decision to leave the Union during the Civil War, and decades of political debate. Today it is a museum of state history.
The restored chambers of the old House and Senate show how government operated in the 19th century. Exhibits cover the political and social history of Arkansas, including a collection of first ladies’ dresses and handmade quilts.
The lawn in front hosted Bill Clinton’s election-night speeches in 1992 and 1996.
