About Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site
Central High School, built in 1927, is a large brick building in Art Deco and Gothic styles, recognized as a national historic landmark for its architecture and its history. In September 1957 it became the center of a national crisis.
Three years after the Supreme Court declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional, nine Black students were enrolled at Central High. The governor of Arkansas ordered the state guard to prevent their entry, and hostile crowds surrounded the school. President Dwight Eisenhower sent Army troops to escort the students, who became known as the Little Rock Nine.
The visitor center across the street tells the story with photos, films, and testimonies. The school remains in operation, and interior visits are conducted with park rangers, by reservation, on specified days and times.
In front of the building, a period gas station has been restored and is part of the historic site.
