How many days

One full day allows you to see Mather Point, walk part of the Rim Trail and travel Hermit Road. With two days, there’s time for Desert View and to descend partway on the Bright Angel Trail.

When to go

From April to October roads and services operate fully, with mild days along the rim. Summer is busier and brings afternoon thunderstorms. In winter, snow covers the rim and viewpoints are quieter; Hermit Road is open to private cars only from December to February.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Helpful but not necessary to reach the park: the Williams train and organized tours are options. Inside the park, shuttle buses serve most viewpoints; for Desert View, a car is more practical.
