About Iowa State Fair

The Iowa State Fair takes place every year in August for 11 days at the fairgrounds in east Des Moines, covering about 180 hectares. It is one of the country’s largest agricultural fairs and attracts more than 1 million visitors each edition. It began in 1854 and has been at the current grounds since 1886.

Pavilions display cattle, pigs, horses and sheep raised by state families, and competitions range from the largest pig to the best pies and preserves. In the agricultural building, each year a life‑size cow is carved in butter, alongside another changing themed work. There is also a fairground, concerts on the main stage, performances throughout the grounds, and more than a hundred food stalls, many serving dishes skewered on sticks.

Historic wooden and brick buildings, such as the animal pavilion and the Varied Industries Building, are part of the grounds. Outside August, the fairgrounds host other events during the year, but visiting makes the most sense during the fair. Dates and program are on the fair’s website.
