About Siasconset

Siasconset, called Sconset by locals, sits at the island’s eastern tip, about 12 km from downtown Nantucket. It began in the 17th century as a camp for cod fishermen, who built small wooden cottages on the cliff. Many of those cottages survive, enlarged over time, and form the village core, protected as a historic district.

In early summer, typically June and July, climbing roses cover the cottages’ roofs and fences, the village’s most familiar image. There is a small square with a general store, a chapel, and the post office, and narrow streets of shells and sand.

The Bluff Walk is a public path that runs past the gardens of the houses on the cliff with views of the Atlantic and leads to Sankaty Head Lighthouse, from 1850, striped red and white. Because of erosion, the lighthouse was moved back about 120 meters in 2007.

Sconset Beach, below the village, faces the open ocean and usually has strong waves and currents.
