About Brant Point Light
Brant Point has marked the entrance to Nantucket Harbor since 1746, when one of the colonies’ first lighthouses was lit there. Earlier towers were destroyed by fires and storms; the current white wooden tower, about 8 meters tall, dates from 1901 and is still operational.
The lighthouse stands on the end of a sand spit, beside the channel used by ferries and sailboats. It is the first landmark passengers see on arrival and the last on departure. Tradition says that those who throw two coins into the sea when passing the lighthouse while leaving the island will return to Nantucket.
A wooden boardwalk leads to the base of the tower, which is not open to visitors. On the harbor side, Jetties Beach, just beside it, has sand, a long stone breakwater, and views of the boats.
At the end of the year, a decorated wreath is attached to the lighthouse, a symbol of the island’s Christmas celebrations.
