About Aquinnah Cliffs

The cliffs of Aquinnah, formerly called Gay Head, form the western point of Martha's Vineyard, about 35 km from Edgartown. Roughly 45 meters high, they display layers of clay and sand in different colors—from red to ochre to gray—deposited over millions of years and uplifted by glaciers. They are a national natural landmark.

The area is traditional Wampanoag territory; the indigenous Wampanoag people have lived on the island for thousands of years and have a recognized community here. For the Wampanoag the cliffs are connected to the figure of Moshup, a giant in their stories. Climbing the cliffs and removing clay are prohibited, to protect the slope from erosion.

At the top is the red brick Gay Head Lighthouse, from 1856, which was moved back from the cliff in 2015 because of erosion and opens for climbs in season. A lookout with Wampanoag craft shops faces the cliffs and the sea, where on clear days you can see the Elizabeth Islands.

A trail descends to Moshup Beach at the base of the cliffs, a mix of sand and stones, with paid parking in summer.
