About Legacy Museum
The Legacy Museum occupies a large building in downtown Montgomery, near the riverfront and the sites where, in the 19th century, enslaved people were kept in pens and sold. It was created by the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal advocacy organization founded by attorney Bryan Stevenson.
The route begins with a room evoking the Atlantic slave trade and continues in chronological order: slavery in the South, the post–Civil War period, racial violence, Jim Crow laws, and the civil rights movement. The final section addresses criminal justice and the prison system, a central theme of the organization’s work.
The exhibition uses projections, documents, objects, recorded testimonies, and jars of soil collected from places where lynchings occurred. It is a long and emotionally heavy visit.
The ticket also grants access to the memorial, the sculpture park, and Montgomery Square.
