About National Monument to Freedom
The Freedom Monument Sculpture Park covers about 7 hectares on the banks of the Alabama River, north of downtown Montgomery, in an area that once had boats and rail lines transporting enslaved people. It is the Equal Justice Initiative’s newest site.
The walking route mixes works by contemporary artists, historical objects, and texts about slavery in the South: plantation labor, escapes, families separated, and resistance. There is a chapel and slave cabins brought from regional farms.
The centerpiece is the National Monument to Freedom, a wall roughly 13 meters tall bearing the surnames that millions of freed people registered in the 1870 census, the first after emancipation.
You can arrive by boat, on a short river trip from downtown that follows part of the historic water route.
