About Sixteenth Street Baptist Church

The 16th Street Baptist Church, built of brick with two towers in 1911, became a gathering point for the civil rights movement in Birmingham. Many of the 1963 marches started from there.

On September 15 of that year, a bomb placed by members of the Ku Klux Klan exploded in the building on a Sunday morning and killed four girls: Addie Mae Collins, Carol Denise McNair, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley. The bombing shocked the nation and contributed to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The church remains active and welcomes visitors on guided tours at specific days and times, with a small exhibition in the basement. Outside, a plaque and a memorial honor the victims.

Across the street, Kelly Ingram Park has sculptures that recreate the scenes of 1963, with dogs and fire hoses, and a trail that tells the story of the marches.
