How many days

One or two days for the museums, the coastal trail and a hike in the Chugach Mountains. The city is also a base for day trips to Turnagain Arm and Girdwood.

When to go

From June to August, with long days and mild temperatures. May and September are cooler and quieter. In winter, it’s very cold, days are short and the long dark nights can show the northern lights outside the city.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

In the downtown area, no: the museums, coastal trail and train station are walkable or reachable by bus. For the Alaska Native Heritage Center and excursions outside the city, a car helps. Drive on the right.
