About Rommel Museum
The Rommel Museum is in a cave carved into the limestone on the east side of Marsa Matruh bay. Tradition holds that Field Marshal Erwin Rommel used the cave to plan operations for the German army during the North African campaign in World War II.
The cave has been turned into a small military museum with maps, photographs, artifacts, and uniforms from the desert war. Nearby is Rommel Beach, a cove of calm water.
The museum complements visits to the El Alamein memorials to the east, which are linked to the same 1942 battles.
Visits are brief and are often done en route to the beaches, since the museum is on the same side of the bay.
