About Dahshur Pyramids
Dahshur is about 10 km south of Saqqara, in the desert. There Pharaoh Sneferu, father of Khufu, had two large pyramids built around 2600 BC, which show how the Egyptians arrived at the smooth-sided pyramid.
The Bent Pyramid changes angle partway up and preserves much of its limestone casing. The Red Pyramid, made of reddish stone, is considered the first true smooth-sided pyramid; the interior can be visited by a long, low ramp.
The site receives fewer visitors than Giza, and the two pyramids are seen in the open desert, without the city around them.
