About Al-Muizz Street
Al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street runs through Islamic Cairo from north to south, from the Bab al-Futuh gate to the Bab Zuweila gate, for about 1 km. It was the main street of the city founded by the Fatimids in the 10th century, and monuments from several centuries were built along it.
In the northern restored section is the complex of Sultan Qalawun, with its mausoleum and hospital, the madrasa of Sultan Barquq, the Mosque of al-Hakim and houses such as Beit al-Suhaymi, an Ottoman residence with courtyards and wooden mashrabiya. Further south the street crosses the Khan el-Khalili area and ends at Bab Zuweila, one of the Fatimid city gates, with two minarets above.
The northern stretch is pedestrian for much of the day, and at night the monuments are illuminated.
