About Egyptian Museum
The Egyptian Museum is on Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo, in a pink-colored building inaugurated in 1902. For more than a century it was the country’s main antiquities museum, and many objects remain there even after the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza.
The galleries house statues of pharaohs and gods, sarcophagi, papyri, jewelry and everyday objects, from the predynastic period through the Roman era. Among the best-known pieces are the Narmer Palette, the statues of Rahotep and Nofret, and the collections from the tombs of Yuya and Tjuyu.
The neoclassical building, with its garden and papyrus pond at the entrance, is part of the history of Egyptology: here are the tomb of Auguste Mariette, founder of the antiquities service, and busts of the Egyptologists who worked in the country.
