Al-Azhar Mosque was founded in 970, soon after the founding of Cairo by the Fatimids, and quickly became a center of learning. Al-Azhar University, associated with it, is one of the oldest universities in the Islamic world still in operation.

The mosque faces Al-Hussein Square and Khan el-Khalili and is open to visitors between prayer times.
