About Khan el-Khalili
Khan el-Khalili is Cairo’s best-known market, in the heart of Islamic Cairo, between Al-Muizz Street and the square of the Mosque of Al-Hussein. It began in the 14th century around a caravanserai, a lodging for merchants, and expanded into covered alleys and lanes of shops.
Shops sell pierced metal lanterns, spices, perfumes, textiles, silver and gold jewelry, copper and leather items and handicrafts. Some doorways and stone arches from the Mamluk era still appear in the lanes.
The market has old cafés where tea and coffee are served at tables in the alley, and at night the activity continues, especially during Ramadan weeks.
