About Italian War Memorial
The Italian Memorial (Sacrario Militare Italiano) lies west of El Alamein on an elevation near the sea. It is a white-stone complex with a tall tower and a chapel, containing the remains of Italian soldiers killed in the North African battles.
The interior walls bear the soldiers’ names, and a small museum shows objects and documents from the campaign. The tower is visible from afar on the coastal plain.
The memorial completes a visit to the Commonwealth cemetery and the German memorial.
The site usually has few visitors and a custodian who opens the chapel.
The road to the memorial crosses stretches of desert between the highway and the sea, with plaques marking the battle lines.
