About El Alamein War Cemetery
The El Alamein War Cemetery sits at the city entrance, beside the coastal road. It is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and contains more than 7,000 graves of soldiers from various countries who died in the North African campaign, especially in the 1942 battles.
The pale stone headstones lie in rows on a dry garden terrain with desert plants. At the entrance, the Alamein Memorial commemorates soldiers with no known grave, with names inscribed on the walls.
It is a place of silence and respectful visitation.
