About Curicuriari Mountain Range

The Serra do Curicuriari is the mountain that marks the horizon of São Gabriel da Cachoeira. It lies southeast of the town, near the mouth of the Curicuriari River, and rises alone over the flat forest. Seen from the waterfront, the sequence of peaks forms the profile of a woman lying down, with a face, chest and legs, which is why it is popularly called the Sleeping Beauty.

The slopes are covered in forest. In the morning it is common for mist to cling to the peaks and gradually dissipate. For the peoples of the region, the mountain ranges and river rocks are linked to origin stories and legends passed down through generations.

The most common way to see it is from a distance, from town, or on a boat trip along the Negro River, which passes islands, rocks and white-sand beaches when the river is low. Approaching it depends on local pilots and guides who know the channels and rapids.

The area around the range is indigenous territory. Tours that include stops in communities or trails into the forest need to be arranged in advance, with the communities themselves and with registered guides.
