About Saint-Jean-Baptiste Street
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Street is the heart of Baie-Saint-Paul. It runs through the village center, near the Gouffre River, and is lined with 19th- and 20th-century wooden and stone houses with porches and steep roofs.
Since the early 20th century, the light and landscapes of Charlevoix have attracted painters, and the village became one of Quebec’s main art centers. Today, dozens of galleries and studios occupy the street and its side lanes, with painting, sculpture, ceramics and crafts. Many artists work in view of the public.
The street also has cafés, bakeries, cheesemakers and restaurants with regional products. In summer, the sidewalks are lively and there are outdoor art events; in winter, the village is quieter, with some galleries remaining open.
