About Minister's Island

Minister's Island is a few kilometres from the centre of St. Andrews and can only be reached by land at low tide: a gravel road crosses the seabed and is submerged under several metres of water when the tide rises.

On the island is Covenhoven, the summer house of Sir William Van Horne, who oversaw construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late 19th century. The property includes the stone-and-wood house, a large barn, a bathing house on the beach and a mill. Tours are guided and scheduled according to the tide.

The island is a provincial historic site. It is open in summer and autumn; check visiting hours for the day, which change with the tide, and the current schedule.
