About St. Andrews historic district

St. Andrews was founded in 1783 by settlers who left the United States after independence to remain under the British Crown. Some families brought dismantled houses on barges from Castine, Maine, and reassembled them in the new village.

The centre preserves the grid layout and many wooden and brick houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, recognized as a national historic district. Water Street, along the pier, concentrates shops, galleries and restaurants. At the tip of the village stands the blockhouse, a small wooden fort built during the War of 1812 to defend the harbour.

On the hill, the large late-19th-century summer hotel recalls the era when the village hosted wealthy families from Montreal and Boston in summer. The pier is the departure point for sightseeing boats.
