About Scaur Hill Fort
Fort Scaur was built in the second half of the 19th century on Scaur Hill on Somerset Island to protect the Royal Naval Dockyard from an attack coming from the main island. It crossed the hill from one side to the other, with a dry moat serving as a barrier.
The fort has stone walls, tunnels, gun positions and a deep moat that can be walked through. It was never used in combat and today is part of Scaur Hill Fort Park, a public park with lawns and trees.
From the top you can see the Great Sound with its islands, Ely’s Harbour, the south coast and, in the distance, the Dockyard. It is one of the best viewpoints in western Bermuda.
