About Royal Naval Cemetery

The Royal Naval Cemetery, known as The Glade, is on Ireland Island, a short distance from the Dockyard. It was opened in the early 19th century to bury sailors, marines, soldiers and their families connected to the British base.

The headstones tell the lives and deaths of those who served in Bermuda, often with details about the ship, age and cause of death. Many died in 19th-century yellow fever epidemics that affected the garrison and the island.

The cemetery is a quiet place by the water and surrounded by trees, visited by those interested in Bermuda’s military and social history. Silence and respect for the graves are requested.
