About John Smith's Bay Beach
John Smith's Bay is the main public beach on the south coast in the parish of Smith's, east of Spittal Pond. The pale sand strip is protected by a reef a short distance from the shore, which dampens some of the waves.
On calm days the water becomes clear and good for swimming and snorkeling near the rocks. Behind the beach there is a lawn with a picnic area.
Because it is on the east, away from the more popular South Shore beaches, it is usually less crowded and frequented by locals, especially on weekends. It’s a good stop for those visiting Spittal Pond or traveling from Hamilton to St. George's along the south coast.
