About West Whale Bay Park
West Whale Bay sits at the far west end of Southampton’s coast, where the South Shore begins to turn north. The name recalls the era when whales were hunted off Bermuda’s coast.
At the top of the cliff is Whale Bay Battery, a 19th-century military battery surrounded by a lawn with open sea views. A trail descends to a small beach sheltered between rocks, with a reef near the shore.
Today the place is popular for whale watching—humpback whales often pass offshore in March and April during their northward migration—and for watching the sunset, since the coast faces west there.
