Get to know the place
The South Shore of Bermuda, in the parishes of Southampton and Warwick, is home to the sequence of beaches that made the island famous. The sand has a pinkish hue from fragments of a small red reef organism, and the beaches alternate with limestone rocks sculpted by the sea.
The best-known stretch is South Shore Park, a protected strip of dunes and cliffs with trails linking Horseshoe Bay, Bermuda’s most famous beach, to Warwick Long Bay, one of the longest. Along the way are small coves such as Chaplin Bay, Stonehole Bay and Jobson’s Cove, a natural pool surrounded by rocks.
Further west, Church Bay has a reef a few meters from the sand and is popular for snorkeling, and West Whale Bay Park is one of the spots to spot humpback whales in spring. At the top of Gibbs Hill, the 1846 cast-iron lighthouse dominates the western landscape.
South Road runs along the coast and is served by buses that connect Hamilton to the Royal Naval Dockyard, making it easy to go from beach to beach.
