About Basilica of Our Lady of Charity
The Basilica of Our Lady of Charity is Huamantla’s main church and houses the city’s patroness image. The 18th-century building has a Baroque façade and an interior with gilded altarpieces.
In August, the Feast of the Virgin of Charity lasts for weeks. On the main night, from August 14 to 15, residents cover about 6 km of streets with carpets of colored sawdust, flowers and seeds, made with stencils, for the procession to pass. The festival is known as the night when no one sleeps.
Near the basilica is the former 16th-century Franciscan convent of San Luis Obispo, with a large atrium and chapels.
