About Church of Santo Madero
The church of Santo Madero sits on top of a volcanic rock hill at the edge of Parras’s center. It was built in 1868 to house a wooden cross of local devotion and is the town’s most visible landmark.
You reach it by a stairway and a stone path that climb the hillside. From the atrium you can see the entire valley: the roofs of the center, the walnut trees, the vineyards and the dry hills around it — a contrast between the green of the oasis and the desert.
Late afternoon is the most popular time, when the light turns golden over the valley. Beside the church there are benches and a small open area where visitors wait for the sunset, and the town lights come on shortly afterward.
